Pirzola came into my life through a series of serendipities. In 2011 a European Saluki breeder approached the Turkish breeder Akin Tulubas about a possible Saluki puppy. Akin set about helping her, searching familiar ground in southeast Turkey for a suitable combination and in December 2011 Pirzola's litter was born to two beautiful smooth hunting Salukis in a village 20 km north of Sanliurfa. Akin chose Pirzola and when she was 6 weeks old he took her to his Boz kennel in Istanbul. The Western breeder was apparently not happy with Pirzola's color of all things and said she wasn't interested after all.

Luckily Akin approached Mary Beth Rogers (Melik) about the puppy and she and Janet Jones (Tek Kulak) stepped in. Janet is an archeologist who is very familiar with Turkey and imported a male, Tek Kulak Acik Goz, and a female, Tek Kulak Tazi Var, from Turkey to the USA in the 1980s. Mary Beth was fascinated by them and they were the reason she began incorporating COO lines into her breeding – Goz and Var live on in some of her lines to this day. Var was from the same area as Pirzola and although 30 years separate the two, they are amazingly similar – the same build, the same face, the same gaze.

Janet began arranging the trip and so Mary Beth flew to Istanbul and brought the 8 week old Pirzola to her farm in Virginia. Pirzola (lamb chop in Turkish!) got the name from Akin and Janet's prefix Tek Kulak was added to it. Tek Kulak means ”oneeared” as Janet's first Turkish import was a herding dog with one cropped ear. I had long admired the Turkish Salukis, particularly those in the southeast, that are in essence much the same as the Salukis I've seen in and imported from Syria. In her puppy pics Pirzola radiated and confident curiosity and I told Mary Beth that if she was ever bred, I would be very interested in a puppy!

Some 18 months passed and the funny little furball turned into a gorgeous young bitch. At around that time Mary Beth talked about having so many good bitches to breed that she wasn't sure how to find the time, while I complained that I desperately needed unrelated bitches for my males. The wonderful Mary Beth asked what I thought of the idea of taking Pirzola herself rather than a puppy from her and then perhaps sending something back eventually! I could hardly believe her generosity and my good luck! We waited until Pirzola was registered with the SPDBS and even had a cardiac ultrasound done and when that looked good we began arranging Pirzola's next trip.

Thanks to Katja Pellikka, Hanna Antikainen and Heli Josefsson I flew to Virginia in December 2013, when Pirzola had just turned 2 years old. If Pirzola's pics had been charming, they were nothing to the girl herself – so beautiful and such a lovely temperament too! After a week's stay we headed home to Finland and Pirzola charmed everyone along the way including fellow travellers and airport personell, greeting everyone in her calm and friendly way. As always when importing I think I was more stressed than the dog, but soon we were home.

Pirzola

I had intended to place Pirzola on breeding terms, thinking that integrating a young adult to my already sizeable pack would be difficult, but not so. The ever happy, sociable and uncomplicated Pirzola serenely took her place in my home and it became clear she was here to stay. I could not be happier. She passed her Finnish breed critiques with flying colors. Pirzola makes every day a joy and I very much hope that she might have a couple of litters. Time will tell if Pirzola's sunshine will be passed down the generations!

Pirzola

I am hoping Pirzola will have her first litter in the summer of 2015 - the prospective sire is Qashani Saroukh Saudi. Fingers crossed!
