Bred by Carin Åström
Owned by Sanna Aaltonen

In the autumn of -95 we were sitting in the kitchen when I happened to take a good look at Tiiti who had suddenly gained a lot of weight... We joked that maybe she was pregnant, but that was supposedly impossible, as I had personally been in charge of keeping an eye on Tenna while Tiiti was on heat... The next day we took her to the vet, thinking she was retaining water.

Of course the ultrasound revealed that she was in fact carrying four pups, due in about 3 weeks! So, we started to prepare for the arrival of the pups. The whole thing was my responsibility so the puppy pen was set up in my room. It wasn't an easy delivery: the contractions were weak, one pup got lodged n the birth canal and there was no milk until a quick stop at the vet solved the problem.

Bacchus

There were 3+1 pups which we named Banderas, Balzac, Bacchus and Boheme. From the beginning I was charmed by the headstrong Bacchus who was only half the size of his littermates but made up for that in tenacity and character, a real Dachsie. When the others milked their dam with their front paws Bacchus was not sufficiently strong and would instead sit on his rump and pump with all four paws!

He had a lovely face and despite being cryptorchid he charmed us all. Our vet said "so what if he has no balls when he has a face like jewellery". His shy but sweet brother Nando (Balzac) stayed at home as well.

Bacchus

Bacchus was always on the move, even to the extent that he kept defying the fenced boundaries of our property no matter how I tried to keep him in. He was also an avid hunter and dug impressive tunnels under the house where he hunted mice for hours on end.

After his brother Nando's death in 2002 Bacchus became very depressed and felt like an outsider as the only Dachshund among my Salukis. We tried having him live with my mother and he did enjoy himself there with likeminded dogs - unfortunately he never got used to her cats and eventually to our great sorrow killed one of them. So back home he came.

In the autumn of 2004 Bacchus, still depressed after his brother's death, found a new home with Sanna Aaltonen and her Dachsie male Nicke. This worked wonderfully and Bacchus once again became his old happy-go-lucky self :) In the summer of 2010 old age began catching up to him and he passed away in July. He was laid to rest at Sanna's summer cottage. Goodbye darling Bacchus, and good hunting with your beloved brother Nando and your best Saluki friend Akasha - I love you, always <3
